The Summit Percussion Group had an outstanding performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention Chamber Music Competition (whew...that's a mouthful!). The judges and audiences alike were impressed with their musicianship and we had a lot of fun! The group will take a short hiatus to focus on the final push towards the end of the semester, but the experiences that we've had have been incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

This week we visited the high school students of Houston and Central. In addition to SPG performing "Space Junk" and "Omphalo Centric Lecture," Dr. Shaltis worked with students at both schools on their All-West band music. An important part of our outreach is not only exposing students to music and sounds they might otherwise hear, but also working side-by-side with them--helping them to become the best musicians that they can be. Next week the group heads up to PASIC to compete against 15 other universities from around the country in a chamber music competition. We hope you'll look forward to updates!

Our first two outreach concerts were amazing! We performed for Houston Middle School students on Monday...they had a ton of great questions about our instruments, what it's like to be a musician, and thinking creatively about music. Thank you to Mr. Spencer Nesvick for having us out! 

This morning we performed for the percussion students of Collierville High School at 7am (!!!!). For many, this was the first time that they had heard a percussion ensemble perform live and hopefully they left looking forward to starting their own repertoire! Special thanks to Mr. James Barnes and Ms. Liz Plenk for coordinating the visit...looking forward to great things from the CHS percussion program!
