This week, the law school's very own Professor John Newman taught Street Law students at Soulsville Charter School about CONTRACTS! The students learned about the "power" of contracts, what a contract is, and what is needed to make a binding agreement, along with what can happen if you break your promise.
At the end of class, the students got to apply what they learned today in a class activity. Group A represented Gucci Mane, and Group B represented a concert hall "Shinglewood Hall." The end goal = strike a deal (a contract) to bring Gucci Mane to Shinglewood Hall.
Thank you to all who have supported the Street Law program thus far! We still have over 2 weeks to go. Please share our campaign and continue to check back in with us for updates!
On a weekly basis, we send law school professors and students into local schools to teach adolescents practical uses and application of the law. Our program structure allows us to either compliment and mirror what the students are already learning in their daily classes or have completely independent classes that allow the students a chance to learn about the legal system and the law that they might not otherwise have an opportunity to learn about.
Pictured is Memphis Law's very own Professor Steven Mulroy. Professor Mulroy was a Shelby County Commissioner from 2006-2014. He is a frequent commentator in local media on legal issues, and has been quoted by such media organizations as the Associated Press, USA TODAY, and the WASHINGTON POST. He holds a B.A. from Cornell University and a J.D. from William and Mary. Professor Mulroy frequently lends his time and assistance to teaching a wide range of classes in the street law program.
