As we here at the Institute for Public Service Reporting undertake our fourth annual NewsMatch fund drive, we look to build on the tremendous success we've enjoyed recently.
That includes $500,000 in national grants this year, including a $100,000 award from the new journalism funding collaborative Press Forward — hence the theme for this year’s campaign, “Pressing Forward”.
Much of that grant money will finance new initiatives. That includes launching one of the nation's few open-source investigation training programs for college students and working journalists, an initiative that will help raise our growing national profile and that of the University of Memphis' Department of Journalism and Strategic Media.
But we still have other critical needs to fund.
First and foremost is our journalism.
We pursue issues that few others have the time, resources or will to take on, topics like gun violence, police accountability, government abuse, public utility policy and racial injustice. Since July alone, we've broken major, in-depth stories questioning the speed of Elon Musk's Memphis xAI plans, uncovering the secret arrival of bitcoin in Memphis, revealing the failure of local police to release internal audit reports, exploring the devastating effect of cuts in public transporation and explaining how Tennessee leaders keep families in poverty by rejecting federal funds.
Though The Institute for Public Service Reporting is part of the UofM, it is almost entirely externally funded. The university does not pay our bills. As an independent, nonprofit news organization, we rely on the generosity of foundation and individuals donors – people like you.
Now is the perfect time to make a tax-deductible gift. Our annual NewsMatch fund drive is now underway. From now through Dec. 31 each dollar you give up to $1,000 is matched by our national and local fund match partners. One dollar becomes three dollars!
You can learn more about our NewsMatch fund drive here. Or you can simply go ahead and give now by clicking on the donate button on this page. We encourage you to also check out our website here. There is no paywall. No subscription is required. While you're there, check out our young journalist mentoring programs, too.
We believe nonprofit, public service journalism should be free – but producing it isn't. We hope you will consider us when making your year-end giving decisions.
Together, we can make a difference in Memphis. Let's all keep Pressing Forward.
