About ANiA Project April 2025

About Us

Originally, the African Students Association (ASA) was started by Dr. Dennis H. Laumann, a history professor at the University of Memphis, as a resource for African students on our campus. Over time, this community grew to encompass not just international African students, but people from all backgrounds that are interested in promoting the African diversity. As more people joined with appreciation for our African cultures, ‘A Night in Africa’ was introduced and has become a tradition over the years to celebrate our diverse African heritage. Due to Covid, ASA has had a small discontinuity, but we have bounced back and trying to sustain this tradition.

Project ANiA 2025

Given ASA’s goal of providing a home away from home for students of African descent and those interested in African culture, ‘A Night in Africa’ is a platform to celebrate African culture through music, cultural performances, fashion and food. Our past events before Covid have been highly successful with eye-catching and unique displays of men and women walking the runway showcasing a variety of African fabrics, clothing and styles. Also, the music and diversity of food from different parts in Africa provides energetic vibes and a fun-filled atmosphere. This has attracted crowds of people who are excited to be part of the experience, have a sense of belonging and feel closer to the African heritage. Considering the success of past events, we are highly optimistic that, with the right support, continuing this tradition of ‘A Night in Africa’ will be worthwhile.

Donations from such awesome generous people like you who appreciate the African diversity are greatly appreciated and will be put towards the costs of the performers, food/drinks, music, decoration and videography/photography for hosting this event! To enable this big day to be successful, we have a goal of raising $1,500 through this MomentUM fundraising so every penny goes a long way. Feel free to gladly put in your donation, and share the good news to your friends and family as you definitely do not want to miss out on this glamorous and fun event. Thank you!
