Who Are We:
The University of Memphis Alternative Break Experience (ABE) student participants will spend the week of March 8th—March 13th serving nonprofit agencies and communities to make a difference in the lives of others while experiencing the culture of the community they are serving. ABE provides students with an opportunity to gain personal growth through education and direct service in order to create life-long links between students and service.
The University of Memphis Alternative Break Experience (ABE) program engages students in short-term service-learning experiences that challenge social, political and economic structures of our global community. Through reflection, education and service, Alternative Breaks develops mutually beneficial community partnerships, critical thinking and leadership skills to create a socially just world.
Our student interest has been so large that we have expanded our program to include 8 trips to locations that will be revealed on February 17th! The funds raised will be used for transportation, meals, and supplies needed for service sites in all communities that student participants will be serving. Any unused funds will be used to expand Alternative Break offerings to create more opportunities for students to serve in more communities locally, nationally, and internationally.
This year our groups will be travelling to the following locations:
- Bahamas (Disaster Relief)
- Chicago, IL (Education
- New Orleans, LA (Community Development)
- Atlanta, GA (LGBTQ+)
- Jacksonville, FL (Poverty)
- Pensacola, FL (Environmental Sustainability)
- Cincinnati, OH (Homelessness)
- Dallas, TX (Food Insecurity)
