Camp HOPE America is one of the only comprehensive interventions designed specifically for children impacted by family violence. Each year, millions of families are affected by violence, putting children from these families at risk for emotional, behavioral, social, and physical health problems. The purpose of Camp HOPE is to help children thrive amidst difficult circumstances by offering a camping and mentoring program that fosters a sense of self-efficacy and adaptive coping skills. Camp HOPE Tennessee is a branch of Camp HOPE America that offers a free, weeklong summer camp to children (ages 7-13) whose families have sought services from the Family Safety Center of Memphis/Shelby County.
We use fun-filled avenues to give campers hope for a brighter future. In addition to traditional camp activities (e.g., field games, ropes courses, swimming, campfires), we incorporate an evidence and values-based curriculum that promotes campers’ belief in themselves, others, and the future. The Family Safety Center has partnered with the University of Memphis to conduct a research study evaluating whether Camp HOPE is meeting its goal of improving the functioning and well-being of children affected by violence in the home. Findings from this evaluation will be used to secure funding for future iterations of the camp and will also inform curriculum development in the future.
